Why are Google or Better Business Bureau reviews of a company important?
Google or BBB reviews of a company are an important measure of real life client experience. Since the company being reviewed can’t modify comments made by clients, you can be sure that the reviews are honest expressions of opinion. Some clients just award between 1 and 5 stars and others take the next step by adding a comment. Both of these are important: one is a vote and the other a vote with an explanation.
How to read reviews
How many reviews are there?
Look for companies with at least 20 reviews, because you’re not going to be able to read much from the results otherwise. Joe fly-by-night can get a few friends to write fake reviews, but it would be pretty hard to get more than 20 to do it, because most people are honest and wouldn’t do it and probably wouldn’t be friends with Joe fly-by-night anyway. On the other hand, 20-50 Google reviews means that 20-50 clients sat down and took the time to express their opinion of the company, and because of that dedication you’re going to get a pretty good idea of what the company strengths and weaknesses are.
Is the star rating good or bad?
Again, judging the company based on star reviews really depends on the number of reviews. If a company only has a couple of reviews, and one of them is a 5 star review and the other a 1 star review by someone angry at the company, that will skew a rating and the result may not be accurate. And if a company has a 5 star rating based on one review and another company has a 4.7 rating based on 50 reviews, of which 48 are five stars and one or two are 1 star, guess which company is likely to have a more accurate star review?
What themes emerge from reading the reviews?
Once a company has lots of reviews, you’ll notice that some things start to get mentioned over and over. “They’re on time” may not mean much if only one or two people mention it, but when you see client after client mention it you can be pretty sure the company tends to show up on time. “The crew is friendly” might only mean the crew was in a good mood that day if you see it once or twice in the reviews, but if you see it in review after review, it starts to paint a picture of the company’s interaction with its clients. And so on.
When you’re researching companies, look for companies with 20 or more reviews, look for star ratings, and look for themes that emerge from the comments. The higher number of reviews there are, the more enthusiastic people are to either endorse or dismiss the company, and the better the reviews will represent a true picture of the company.
